LÉVA´s philosophy
We believe that two factors are particularly crucial for successfully developing sustainable places. The first is ensuring a good physical environment. The second is involving local stakeholders and resources in placemaking processes to foster shared ownership, harnessing the ideas and assets of the people who use the space.
Under the Norwegian Planning and Building Act, provisions should be made for public participation in all planning processes. We have tested and developed various participatory methods to make these processes accessible to various segments of the public, thereby increasing the diversity and level of engagement. This underpins democracy.
Unlike a planning or construction process, placemaking has no end date. Involving stakeholders outside the formal planning processes from the outset is key to making a sustainable and prosperous community and place.
This approach, known as placemaking, emphasizes the importance of engaging the local community and harnessing their capabilities. Fostering long- term local interest, ownership, and engagement affects a place´s reputation and identity. Whether a residential location or business location, placemaking processes can influence the level of appeal and the diversity of people drawn to it.
Creating a socially sustainable development, therefore, requires a substantial and inclusive process. Everyone benefits when grassroot community members and decision-makers pull in the same direction.
LEVA offers strategic guidance on both physical place development and placemaking processes. Often, we serve as a translator and mediator, facilitating communication between the various parties involved in a development.
We have a "top-down" approach in planning cities and places while at the same time facilitating processes "bottom-up" together with local communities. This way we create dynamic spaces and engaging processes and projects across disciplines and interest groups.
